Sandown Trends and Free Tips: Sat 22nd Aug 2020

This Saturday (22nd August 2020) the ITV cameras are not only at York to cover their final day of their Ebor Festival, but they are also at Sandown Park to show FOUR LIVE races.

We’ve got all the LIVE Sandown races covered with key trends and stats.

Sandown Horse Racing Trends

2.05 - Betway Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-90) 1m2f ITV

Only 3 previous runnings
3/3 – Returned 8/1 or shorter in the betting
3/3 – Carried between 9-1 and 9-5 (inc) in weight
3/3 – Winners from stalls 3, 4 or 5
0/3 – Winning favourite
Trainers Roger Charlton, Clive Cox and Sylvester Kirk have won this race
Trainer David Menuisier has a 39% record with his 3 year-olds at the track
Trainer Sir Mark Prescott has a 27% record with his 3 year-olds at the track
Trainer John Gosden has a 22% record with his 3 year-olds at the track

Just the three past runnings of this race, but with the winners coming from stalls 3, 4 and 5 then this might be a trend building up. Cozone (3), Tell Me All (4) and New Chapter (5) fit the bill here. The David Menuisier yard have a good record at the track with their 3 year-olds (39%) too so their LUIGI VAMPA (e/w) is one to note. This 3 year-old was a close fourth in a competitive handicap at Goodwood last time out and gets in off the same mark. The yard also run Galactic Glow, who should be noted in the betting. Tenbury Wells, for John Gosden, comes here on a three-timer and Godolphin’s Brilliant Light are others to add to the shortlist, but I was taken with the way COZONE won last time out at over this course and distance. He missed the break that day too but still travelled well to win the race by an easy 1 ¼ lengths and the fact he was well-backed that day too suggests connections feel he’s an above average sort. Draw 3 looks perfect and he’s the only CD winner in the field.

2.40 - Heed Your Hunch At Betway Handicap Cl3 (4yo+ 0-90) 1m ITV

No previous runnings
Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has a 40% record with his 4+ year-olds at the track
Trainer David Menuisier has a 31% record with his 4+ year-olds at the track
Trainer William Haggas has a 25% record with his 4+ year-olds at the track

With a 40% record at the track with his 3 year-olds the Saeed Bin Suroor runner – Piece Of History – can’t be ruled out, but does return from a long break and has a bit to prove on recent runs. Barossa Red, recent Leicester scorer – Enigmatic – and course winner Marronnier – are others that can be popular. But GOLDEN FORCE looked to have more to come despite only winning by a head last time at York. He’s up 6lbs for that but is a horse I know trainer Charlie Fellowes thinks is a fair sort. Yes, a bit quirky, but talented and after two wins there is every chance they’ve found the key to him. DEAN STREET DOLL (e/w) is the other to play. Coming from the David Menuisier yard, that have a 31% record with their 4+ year-olds at the track, and has been running well of late after solid runs at here and at Goodwood.

3.15 - Play 4 To Win At Betway Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-90) 1m ITV

Only 3 previous runnings
3/3 – Winners between stalls 5-7 (inc)
3/3 – Carried between 9-6 and 9-9 (inc) in weight
2/3 – Drawn in stall 5
1/3 – Winning favourites
Trainers George Scott, Martin Smith and Simon Crisford have won this race before
Trainer Roger Charlton has a 23% record with his 3 year-olds at the track
Trainer Roger Varian has a 23% record with his 3 year-olds at the track has
Trainer Charlie Appleby has a 23% record with his 3 year-olds at the track
Trainer John Gosden has a 22% record with his 3 year-olds at the track

Only three past runnings to go on but with all three past winners coming from stalls 5-7 and carrying 9-6-and 9-9 in weight then there are some trends building up. Trainers Roger Charlton, Roger Varian, Charlie Appleby and John Gosden have good records with their 3 year-olds at the track so their MAKRAM (Charlton), ZEGALO (Varian), FIRST WINTER (Appleby) and CEMHAAN (Gosden) could be the ones to focus on. Jean Baptiste, Sea Trout Reach and the unexposed Raaeq are others that catch the eye, but I’m happy to stick with MAKRAM and ZEGALO here. Makram was a nice winner at Ascot last time out over this trip and looks the sort to have more to come despite a big-looking 9lb rise in the ratings. The other pick – Zegalo – is the only proven CD winner in the field after winning here last month and wasn’t disgraced in a better race at HQ last time out.

3.55 - Betway British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes (Plus 10/GBB Race) Cl5 (2yo) 7f

No previous runnings
Trainer John Gallagher has a 27% record with his 4+ year-olds at the track

Not much in the way of trends to go on here so it might be worth sticking with the only recent winner in the field QUEEN’S COURSE. This 3 year-old won by 2 lengths at Doncaster last week and even a 9lb hike might not be enough to stop her going in again. She travelled well that day and probably could have won by a bit further than the 2 length margin. Dream World, Kennocha and Chloellie are the only other proven distance winners in the field so have to be considered, with the consistent Gilt Edge looking another that can get in the shake-up.
